Metaplanet doubles down on its crypto strategy
Japanese company Metaplanet has taken another strategic step by announcing a zero-interest bond issuance worth 2 billion yen (~$13.3 million). The goal – further investment in Bitcoin (BTC) and reinforcing its position as a leading corporate holder of cryptocurrency.
The bonds will be available through EVO FUND and will mature on September 30, 2025, allowing investors to redeem them at full value.
3,200 BTC: Metaplanet now in the global Top 10
With the newly acquired BTC, Metaplanet now holds approximately 3,200 Bitcoins, making it the 10th largest publicly traded company holding crypto, according to BitcoinTreasuries.net.
Interestingly, the company also expanded its leadership by adding Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, to its advisory board.
Sharp stock decline – market reacts to geopolitics
Despite the positive news, Metaplanet shares plummeted following the announcement. However, this is not an isolated incident – the Nikkei 225 also posted losses, influenced by the upcoming U.S. tariffs effective April 2.
Paul Howard from Wincent commented that the market reaction was unrelated to Metaplanet specifically, but rather due to broader uncertainty. Analyst Aran Hawker from CoinPanel added that macroeconomic risks and geopolitical tensions are encouraging investors to seek “safe havens” like Bitcoin.
Conclusion:
Metaplanet’s decision to increase its BTC holdings reflects strong confidence in the long-term value of cryptocurrencies. Despite short-term volatility, the company is demonstrating a future-oriented strategy – an approach that may inspire other institutions as well.
