Items from the game Off the Grid are selling for thousands of dollars as it prepares to launch on Steam—but how will its crypto elements be integrated?
In brief:
- Off the Grid has begun migrating players to its mainnet, where in-game items are traded as NFTs.
- The game is set to launch on Steam in June, despite the platform’s ban on blockchain games since 2021.
- Some collectors are holding rare items in hopes of a demand spike following an upcoming update.
What is Off the Grid and what’s new?
The shooter game Off the Grid by Avalanche has begun gradually migrating its players to the GUNZ mainnet, where they can trade in-game items for GUN tokens. Although only about 0.13% of players currently have access to trading, the market is already buzzing—with some items selling for thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency.
Expansion to Steam despite blockchain game ban
The game is preparing for a Steam launch in June, even though the platform banned blockchain games back in 2021. Off the Grid is already available for PlayStation and Xbox, though both platforms also restrict crypto functionality.
Until now, all console players have only played Off the Grid in a testnet environment, meaning blockchain features were not active. This means they couldn’t trade their items or profit from rare weapons and gear.
Mainnet migration starts with PC players
Theodor Agranat, Web3 Director at Gunzilla Games—the developers of Off the Grid—told Decrypt that the migration to mainnet is starting with PC but that all wallets will eventually be moved. It’s still unclear how the crypto features will be implemented, considering Steam’s ban and the lack of support on other platforms.
Players have noticed that the official Steam listing for Off the Grid mentions an in-game marketplace, which may hint at crypto functionalities.
Currently, there are nearly 16.5 million wallets on the GUNZ testnet created specifically for Off the Grid. At the same time, only 21,000 players are active on the mainnet.
Despite the small number of active traders, there have already been significant sales:
- Prankster tactical vest sold for $2,393,
- ZipperMouth mask for about $1,100,
- Convict chestplate for over $500.
Collectors focus on the Pioneer set
These items are extremely rare—according to fans, fewer than 300 ZipperMouth masks were ever created. However, Gunzilla reserves the right to reissue both ZipperMouth and Convict items. Agranat confirmed that Convict gear will “absolutely” be reissued.
Because of this, collectors now consider Pioneer items the rarest—they were distributed with the first OTG Pro subscription box and will not be reissued. Collector MoneyMagician reports that this has led to an almost complete lack of Pioneer items on the market.
The same goes for the Kestrel Legacy—a weapon with special traits during the closed playtest that is no longer produced. While there are other Legacy and Retro weapons, Kestrel Legacy is considered the most valuable due to its significance in the game’s history.
Upcoming update may spark five-figure NFT sales
MoneyMagician explains that players are expecting a major update that will bring visual upgrades and deeper lore around the weapons. This could lead to the first NFT sales reaching five figures. That’s why collectors are holding onto their rarest items, anticipating a surge in demand.
Once we see the first five-figure sales, FOMO will trigger a snowball effect,” says MoneyMagician. “That will attract a new wave of attention and prices will rise along with market volume.
Agranat declined to share further details about the update, stating that the current priority is completing the migration to mainnet.
Why is the Prankster set dominating the market?
For now, the Prankster set is the most sought after, even though it’s not as rare as the Pioneer set. Prankster was released in the second battle pass, while Pioneer was in the first. According to MoneyMagician, the demand is driven by its more attractive design.
In the last 24 hours:
- Two Prankster Woodpecker weapons sold for $600 and $570, respectively,
- Prankster goggles for $467,
- Prankster mask for $1,008.
The biggest sale so far remains the Prankster tactical vest, which sold for $2,393.
Rarity isn’t always the deciding factor—it’s about what excites the community.
says MoneyMagician.
Pioneer is green—it’s harder to match. But Prankster looks amazing and gives off a Joker-vs-Batman vibe.
