Yield Guild Games (YGG) has introduced its first “Casual Degen” game and launched a new Web3 gaming publishing arm on Pudgy Penguins’ Abstract Chain network.

In brief:

  • YGG has launched a new publishing brand called YGG Play, focused on casual Web3 games designed for crypto-native users.
  • Their first game, LOL Land, is a browser-based board game featuring Pudgy Penguins community characters and token-based rewards.
  • The game debuts exclusively on Abstract Chain and already boasts over 100,000 pre-registrations, according to YGG.

A New Approach: Web3 for Degens, Not the Mass Market

After four years of watching Web3 games struggle to find their audience, Yield Guild Games believes the industry needs to rethink how to connect players with the kinds of games they actually want: light, chaotic fun — aka “casual degen” experiences.
Instead of chasing mainstream adoption, the guild has launched YGG Play — a publishing division dedicated to games that embrace degen culture, beginning with LOL Land, a browser-based title targeting crypto-savvy players.

People play casual games on their phones while commuting, standing in line, or taking breaks. They do it for fun and rewards like streaks, badges, or collectibles — and they spend real money on them,

said YGG co-founder Gabby Dizon.
After its experience with the play-to-earn boom in 2020, YGG has learned what works and what doesn’t, leading to a strategic pivot: from investor to creator of Web3 games.

LOL Land: Style, Gameplay, and Rewards

The game features four themed boards: YGG City, Beach Day, Carnival, and Ice World Wonderland, showcasing Pudgy Penguins IP with characters based on community members like Aaron Teng and Rusk0f.
LOL Land offers two play modes:

  • Free play – unlimited spins but no token rewards.
  • Premium mode – requires paid spins that earn points, redeemable for YGG tokens from a $10 million prize pool.

The game exceeded 100,000 pre-registrations ahead of its Abstract Chain debut.

Players can earn YGG tokens and use them to acquire NFTs,

explained Dizon.

The Creator’s Experience: From Casual to Web3

Before I got into crypto and founded YGG, I was a game developer for over 20 years,

Dizon shared.

I spent most of my career making casual games.

Targeting Degens, Not the Mainstream

The publishing strategy is deliberately focused on crypto enthusiasts rather than traditional gamers. According to Dizon, this is a large and still underserved segment.

If you look at people trading meme coins, minting NFTs, or speculating on exchanges — that’s the exact audience for casual degen games,

he said.

Can Web3 Games Survive?

When asked whether Web3 games can endure, Dizon — a fan of RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — is optimistic:

I believe Web3 games can make a lasting impact. Making games is hard. Doing it with a new technology and discovering the right format for it is even harder.
